Yes, Coffee Can Help You Lose Weight And Here’s Why

“Coffee will NOT make you lose weight!”

“Haters gon’ hate!”

Okay, okay. I’ll bite.

So, no, coffee won’t “make” you lose weight. It’s not gonna do it for you. It won’t slink through your system and spirit the adipose off your abs as you pack it on, one plate of ham casserole at a time today when you sit down for Thanksgiving. (Happy holidays, btw, all.) And, no, you don’t burn a significant enough amount of calories by the elevated metabolic level that flat white just imparted. Obviously not. That’s on par with the myth about negative calorie foods that cause weight loss. As with any weight loss amplifier, you’ve gotta work with it. But what coffee does is a couple of magical things that lead to losing weight in a big way.

The first? It’s a fantastic central nervous system jump start. If you’re lacking the energy to run, and you force yourself, what happens? Maybe you don’t go so far. Maybe you don’t push very hard. Maybe your form is lazy because you’re just going through the motions and focusing on getting back to the sofa. (Speaking from experience here.) But, often, if you pop a couple’ve espresso beans or sip a quick cup of joe, you do a 180. Caffeine puts you on some Clark Kent in the phone booth level shiz. What’s more, not only do you get the motivation to hit the gym; you also feel energized to run farther than you’d planned and work harder as you do.

The second reason? It stifles the snack monster. And that’s especially helpful around this season (ThanksChristmas), when feasts are a daily thing and errant munching is a norm. Work parties, friend outings, and holiday dinners are bad enough. But then your clients come in with the peppermint bark and assorted carmelized nuts and it’s all over. Wouldn’t it be great if you just didn’t want it? Yeah. Caffeine can do that. My trick? A grande flat white from Starbucks – half of which I drink in the morning to fuel the first half’ve the day, and half before afternoon. When I do that, all I want is just exactly what I need to keep going through work and no more. Bonus? None’ve that post lunch, full tummy proclivity to zonk out when my 12:30 patients are rolling in the door. (Often, literally, with a walker.) Am I starving myself? Maybe by chubby American standards, where overeating is sadly becoming the norm. But by biological here-are-your-daily-caloric-requirements standards, absolutely not. I’m doing just fine.

Oh, and for those of you thinking, “I can’t have caffeine; it gives me the jitters”, fear not. I’ve got your back with a little magic trick I recently learned. Ever had matcha or green tea? For those who have, do you ever notice how it wakes you up – but doesn’t have your hand bones quivering with nervousness ten seconds into sipping it? That’s because those herbals have theanine in them. Thus, by simply adding theanine to your morning coffee (or taking it as a tablet before or after), you can avoid the void of ADHD and shakiness you might typically suffer on the stuff, merely reaping all the awesome weight loss benefits instead. Caveat? You’ll wanna make sure to finish your java by noon o’ clock so it can clear your system by snooze o’ clock.

Lest you join the ranks of the insomniac meme club…

In sum, nada will lose weight for you. But there are some fab natural supplements that can help.

So when it comes to weight loss tools, don’t sleep on caffeine.

(Not that you could…)
