Are There Fruits To Avoid While Trying to Lose Weight?

“All fear the fructose!”

Okay, we’ve spoken before about how sugar can be kinda dangerous when we’re trying to lose weight. We’ve also spoken about how high fructose content can fatten ya, how the altered sugar levels can leave you lethargic, and how you ultimately crave even more calories than you need. (Remember all that?) And, so far, the general rule’s been simple: just don’t eat the processed stuff. The fruit’s okay – but avoid the fake stuff at all costs.

But, now, they’re telling you some fruits are worse for your diet than others?

On account of their sugar count?

(The only thing to avoid is advice like this. And excess consumption, duh.)

Yeah, I’ve read that nonsense recently as well. In fact, a recent article I just saw talked about the higher sugar content that’s lurking in watermelon, mangoes, and grapes. The conclusion was to avoid those during times of dire dieting. And, while I get and appreciate the idea, my perspective remains the same as it ever was: fruit’s got its own rules. In its unadulterated, organic form, you’ve got the water, fiber, and filling nature to satiate you. You feel full enough to avoid overindulging.

This doesn’t apply, however to the sacks of shriveled persimmons and apricots that fail to fill. It also doesn’t apply to those fruit drinks, strained through the juicer, who’ve been deprived of that filling, pulpy gold you just threw away. And it also doesn’t apply to that pile of overly sweetened canned peaches in your pantry, suffocating in their own syrup. These don’t constitute fruit in its natural form. Get you some goodness, straight off the plant and plant that on your tongue. So long as you’re on a diet that’s otherwise healthy (natural, non processed, and macro balanced), the tendency to eat in excess of your caloric requirements shouldn’t ever be an issue. Mother nature’s a boss. She knows what she’s doing. No intervention necessary. And that goes for everything from exotic fruit to basic grapes. Your body will innately know you’ve had enough of those fuchsia spheres or wedges’ve massive red melon. In the end, weight loss diets are tough enough with all those rules. We needn’t add some irrational fear of the earth’s desserts. Just moderate, mindfully munch, and the results will be just as delicious as that plate of mangoes you just enjoyed.

So, go on.

Eat that natural sweetness up fearlessly, sugar.
