Will This Amazon Product Make You Lose Weight?

I love a good weight loss before ‘n after transformation story.

Even more so when it’s tied to a product.

Why? Because it’s excellent prey for me to pounce on, gnash my vampire teeth into, and drag back to my blog lair to eviscerate, line by line. Or at least headline by headline. Like the one that read, “This woman lost 100 pounds with this Amazon product.” I recognized the clickbait. And I entered anyway. Spoiler alert is this: the chick (called Lexi) did buy a useful product. They’re reusable, Tupperware bento boxes you can meal prep in and take to work or wherever. And how’d they help her lose weight? The same way a lot of meal prepping can: by dividing out the portions ahead of time and keeping you from eating out because you either didn’t pack lunch or you’re too lazy to arrange a meal at the end of the day.

And what’s my issue with that?

My issue’s that we love to place the victory on some external. The truth is, if any one of us were to purchase these partitioned Tupperware boxes when we weren’t yet ready to change our lifestyle habits yet, there’d be zero difference. I’d have one. And then, if the eat-your-feelings demon still stirred within me, there’d be a second trip to the fridge. I’ve heard this so many times from friends who’ve struggled with weight loss. They go through innumerable trends until they realize its they personally who need to take an active part in their own weight loss.

The truth is, the victory is on Lexi. No one and nothing else. She had to hit her rock bottom by seeing those top scale numbers. And she used that as fuel to choose better food fuel, move more, and reach her ideal weight loss goal. As she put it: “I knew I was gaining weight at a fast pace. Every season I went up an entire pant size,” she told POPSUGAR. “I didn’t like what I was seeing in the mirror, I hated going shopping for clothes, and most certainly didn’t want to be in any pictures. I knew I needed to change because I was simply unhappy with who I was becoming.”

And now, after working out four times a week and eating cleaner, portioned meals, homegirl looks like this.

But the boxes didn’t force her to portion control.

They didn’t send her out to the gym on those days she “didn’t feel like going”.

They didn’t make her drink more water. Or start strength training. Or give up processed and sugary food. It was her hooking into that moment of clarity and keeping it with her that did so. It was a commitment to that. Now, in the end, I’m not saying this product is bad or it won’t help you. I’m just saying that Lexi didn’t lose weight because of it. Lexi lost weight because of Lexi. So get the bentos if you like. Just know that for the boxes to work, you’ve gotta live outside the box of bad habits you’ve already built.
