How Cutting the Cheese Makes You Lose Weight

I’m a pretty faithful plant eater.

But, unlike most vegans who lie about missing animal products, I’ll admit it:

Sometimes, I legitimately miss cheese.

(But clearly not as much as this extra chick…)

And I’ll admit something else too. I’ve indeed flirted with the idea of cheating with cheese before. (I know… I know. I’ll make sure to say twelve Hail Mary’s on my vegan rosary to repent for such sinful thoughts #InsertEyerollEmoji) But, from the pizza slices covered in the stuff, to enjoying it drizzled over overpriced movie theater treats, that fattening wonder (with its all its natural morphine) was sheer brain fellating tongue fun. So, shoot me if I fantasize. Especially when, while the Daiya knockoff blocks of faux smoked Gouda are definitely delicious, the same problem remains that always did back when I munched legit muenster and mozzarella. Health. (Or lack thereof.) With all that fat and grease, cheesy nachos are not so great for any of us. And the typical vegan version’s not much better. But, much like many of my other issues that disappeared when I started eating green, plant based living’s got a fix for that too.

And it’s called nutritional yeast.

Sure, the name sounds kind’ve un-wonderful and conjures up some unsavory imagery. I’ll give ya that. But, first, that’s why we call it “nooch” in lieu. (Wait… Is that any better?) And, second, what it lacks in having a good label, it more than makes up for in quality. Sprinkled on anything from baked potatoes to popcorn, this stuff’s like a cheddary powder that can make the most basic meal super savory. What’s more, as vegans, we’re always worried about getting in our protein, aren’t we? Well, nooch offers a whopping dose of exactly that, as it’s indeed a complete protein. Add to that the fact that it’s high in all those minerals and vitamins (espesh the B vitamins that make your cranial mop look all glossy and your skin glow), and you can’t help but be sold. Because, aside from the fact that protein helps keep you feel fuller for longer and the vitamins help you stay energized enough to workout and make good food choices, the high vitamin B-12 content contributes to better breakdown of carbs into energy. Which, for us, means weight loss. But don’t believe me. Believe science.

Per Mercola, which looked at a study on runners taking nooch:

“Those runners who were taking the equivalent of a daily spoonful of nutritional yeast cut their rates of infection in half. And they felt better, too. They were asked how they felt on a scale of one to ten. People taking the sugar pills were okay, down around four or five, but those taking identical looking capsules of the fiber found in nutritional yeast were up at six or seven.”

(How it will look when we all start saying “nooch” instead’ve “cheese” for pictures…)

In the end, it can’t be denied:

Our new shoo-in for those former moo products is a toothsome improvement.

Which is why I’m happy to sub in some nooch… and cut the cheese.
