How much weight can I lose in a single workout?

If you’re living where I am, you didn’t get much of a segue from winter into summer weather.

It’s like we skipped spring and went straight for skimpy wardrobe season. That’s right. Summer’s coming early, it would appear. Which means… we can’t lose our winter insulation quickly enough. And that fact’s collectively led us all to the question: “Um… how quickly can I get this weight off?” Better yet, I even heard the inquiry, recently: “How many pounds can I lose in a single workout?”

Now, that might seem a little bit sophomoric if you’re a sweat veteran. However, for those new to the realm of weight loss, it’s totally legit. People want weight loss and they want it yesterweek. So, what’s the answer? Well, the answer’s that you could stand to lose a good several pounds in a single workout. The bad news? That it’s not the kinda weight you’re looking to lose. Most of that’s water weight you’ve gotta replace, lest you catch a massive case of the deadsies.

(Trust, you don’t look any cuter from water weight loss)

Indeed, I learned this one the hard way during Bikram class, not long ago.

While my backward brain was indeed pleased to see the digits descend on the scale in so short a time, it was all back again (plus some – that class must activate your ravenousness chakra) by the next morning. And when did the real poundage go away? And how quickly? Well, I can’t speak for Bikram. But, for the portly and impatient nixing the binges and hitting the gym religiously, it can happen fairly fast. First, we’ve gotta consider the legit el-bees we wanna get rid of are fat. And fat eradication relies on some calorie blasting calculations. See, according to the pros who’ve worked this out, we’ve gotta torch 3,500 calories to burn a single pound. Do a good, high intensity, hour long workout, chock full’ve variety, and you could accomplish knocking off a pound every three to four days. (Anything more than that, done daily, isn’t exactly sustainable and will land you an injury, most likely. Which will land you on the couch, laid up, and heavier than even before.) Keep it up, and within a month, you’re down ten pounds. (Well, so long as you don’t follow it up each sweat stint with a snackathon like my own post-Bikram binge.)

So, what’s the most weight can you lose in a single workout?

About a third’ve a pound – if you’re smart.

(But if you’re *really* smart, you’ll know that less is still more than chronic sofa surfing’s currently earning you.)

Just be diligent with the gym, diet right, and patiently wait for that weight to come off.

That way, it’ll stay off through the long summer.
