So, you may’ve heard that fruit makes for a fabulous weight loss breakfast.

It’s juicy. It’s high in fiber. It’s low in calories.

But… what if you hate fruit?

(I don’t get it… but I accept that some’ve you weirdos loathe my favorite snack category…)

Not long after drafting a whole article on the wonders of eating things like peaches to initiate your day, I heard someone say something. Something awful. Something that almost made me do a spit-take with the half mashed banana in my mouth. See, she’d been asking me about my plant based diet, what I ate to lose weight and stay slender, and how she could do the same. That’s when I suggested commencing the A.M. with a healthy breakfast. One full of protein, grains, and fruit. Her reply?

“I hate fruit.”

Her words hit like a barb wire entwined baseball bat to the cranium. (Seriously – who hates fruit?) But, after collecting my mandible from the floor, I realized something. It doesn’t have to be fruit that’s neighboring your grains and protein on that plate. There’s another perfectly suitable produce to put there: veggies. In fact, with its lower sugar, it might even be better for breakfast, according to the gurus of food. You still get all the high water content and fiber, fewer calories than some other foods, and even better blood glucose levels. Paired with your protein go-to and grains, you’ll be made in the satiated shade (that all the bitter folk are gonna throw when they see them pounds dropping off you like nada). Not only that, but – per the CDC – you can still keep things delicious, too. For example, instead’ve firing your favorite morning meal from your diet, you can just sub in veggies for one or more of the eggs or cheese you might usually use. (Bonus and gold star if you use plant based egg and cheese subs, in which case you don’t even have to do that.) And the fun part? You’re retaining all of that savory factor, while nixing a significant amount of calories.

That said, it’s never suggested that you skip out on a necessary food group altogether.

We do need fruit, too. So, get in those couple’ve sweet servings via smoothie (or something you can stomach sucking down). Also, it does help if you try to remain open minded – and remember that you only loathe the fruit you’ve tried so far. Think about all the types of fruit there are in the world. It’s not likely you’ve tried every type, right? Right. So, hit up your local Global Food market to see what fruity produce players you may’ve inadvertently been sitting on the bench for your entire life. You never know which ones might speak to your palate ’til you give ’em a try. But, until you find them…. enjoy ingesting their less loathsome cousins every morning.

So, my weight loss minded fruit-o-phobics, there’re no more excuses to skip a healthy breakfast:

If you hate nature’s candy, keep some veggies handy!
