Early to dine, early to rise, make a chicks fit a slimmer size

“If you wanna lose weight, then eat earlier in the evening.”

Yeah, you’ve heard this one before. (Probably from me.) And while the rationale has been legit all along (it’s pretty tough for your system to log off when it’s gotta process gastric contents), there’s also another big reason we should all be punctual when it comes to slurping down our supper. And that’s to do with tomorrow. (Specifically the morning.) I was just thumbing through some dumb, dated weight loss magazine at the pool yesterday when I read this tip from some F list celeb. But I’m throwing no shade because she’s totally right. Getting your munching done long before you snooze means you rise from your slumber sooner.

(Because: hunger.)

So what?

Well, while it’s tough not to stuff ourselves at night as a way to de-stress, eating earlier has some slimming implications. Think about it. What often prevents you from getting that healthy breakfast that keeps you from overeating (or even just eating poorly) throughout the day? What excuse do you use for not doing a morning workout? It’s so often that you “don’t have time”. Why? Because you (and by you, I mean me – before I started trying this out for myself) keep hitting snooze. But would you keep hitting snooze if legit hunger pangs were the internal alarm clock niggling at you like a child on Christmas? By getting up early, three things stand to happen.

First, you don’t get that fatigue you get when you keep going back to sleep and cutting the new sleep cycles you’ve started short. And that means fewer terrible dietary choices that you’d usually make when tired. Second, that breakfast your body’s begging for will sustain you through the day (so long as it’s something like oatmeal – not leftover lo mein) so you can stay satiated for longer in lieu of nibbling the cronuts your coworker cruelly brought in to taunt you with while you’re trying to lose weight.

(Then why ain’t it work for you yet?)

And third is the workout. Let’s face it. Even for an aerobic addict like myself, forcing a workout after a long day at work can seem impossible. But, if you’re already up early, with a light and energizing breakfast under your belt, there’s plenty of time for it. There’s also plenty of energy that you haven’t yet wasted on thankless patrons or patients or people in general that you hafta deal with. The plus? Studies have shown that a good workout can combat the tendency to ingest as much food as we do when we haven’t been moving so much.

In sum, I know it’s tough to nix the nocturnal nibbling. (I’m sometimes guilty of it myself.)

But, if you wanna get slender, suck down that supper sooner, sweetheart.
