Grandma knows what’s up – get moving!

One of my favorite commercials of all time is this low-budget affair from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (which goes to show there’s a group for literally anything).

The kid’s decline into sloth, of course, reaches its apex at the end when he calls the grandmother, who has to put down what she’s doing, shuffle with her cane through the hallway, and pick up the phone – only to be greeted by her ungrateful grandson placing a takeout order for a chilled grape soda.

Her look at the end belongs in the annals of history as one of the best reaction faces of all time.

The truth is no joke, however. Grandma likely grew up in an environment where she had to rake leaves, walk the dog, cook food, and had a television with a screen the size of a postage stamp that the family watched together just long enough to see Jack Paar.

Her flip-phone-using grandson has ballooned to an unfortunate corpulence because of his refusal to keep moving.

It’s a good lesson, and a sobering one, with teens today as sedentary as 60 year olds, and the lack of play or even movement among kids officially described as “causing harm“.

We’ve gotta keep kids moving – or they won’t live to be grandparents shuffling through hallways.
