Can 9Round make you less round?

“I shouldn’t’ve come here on leg day…”

This was my sole thought as I struggled through the first station – jump roping – at my local 9Round.

(Well, that and asking myself why I was punishing myself with this on my holiday from school)

(To my shame, the toy kids play with on the playground is my most facepalm worthy non-skill)

But, as I got going (and the lactic acid did as well, from my legs) I started to find my flow. After all, the queen of three a days doesn’t quit. Even if she is tripping over that blasted string she can’t seem to clear each time it hits the floor. Because the trick to surviving something like 9Round is just like any other “unpleasant” exercise that yields worthy results. Focus. Whether you’re on Round 1 or that 10th option they offer to masochists like myself is irrelevant. You always focus on station number now. Actually, not just station number now, but rep number now. Make this move perfect. And this one. And this one… The bell’s gonna ring when it rings. So just pop back into the present whenever you find your mind wandering off to when it’s gonna end.

So, how’d I do?

Yeah, sure, I’ve got the endurance. And the dude did indeed hafta tell me, “Sorry – that’s all we’ve got for you for tonight!” by the time I was done. But, honestly, some’ve those stations were humbling as hell. The exercise where you hold your body up on those rings with elbows extended and lift your knees to your chest? Fail. Fail and a half, even. Or the one where you punch the bag from a plank position in between pushups? So much facepalm. But you know what? That’s what made me wanna come back. There are some things I totally killed. But knowing there’s always room to grow in a program makes me wanna come back for more. Sure, they combine kickboxing with other high intensity exercises – but there’s always opportunity to progress. For every level.

What’s more, you can come any time they’re open.

No schedules. No appointments. You just sign in and start sweating.

And how much’re you gonna burn during one’ve these body obliterating excursions? Well, that’s the third reason I dig this place. While, the website says, “roughly 500 calories”, they totally save themselves on the wording there. As we all probably know by now, everyone kills those calories a li’l differently. The more you weigh, the more you tend to burn. The more you workout, the more efficient you are at working out, and you might not burn as much. But you wanna know the benefit either way? Regardless of what shape you’re in, the fact that this is high intensity will mean you’re burning blubber long after you’re done. Also, the fact that it’s full body means you’re getting a thoroughgoing workout. And the fact that weights are involved means you’re building muscle – which burns even more calories than your average elliptical sesh.

And the transformation photos don’t lie.

This shiz gets results on the weight loss front (and back):

In the end, I’m not sure why I went to 9Round on leg day. Or on one of the last days of freedom from the tyranny of higher education, for that matter. But, seeing as those days’ve freedom are over, I’m glad I did. Because these days, time’s the one commodity I’ve not got much of. So, being able to get more burn for my buck is a biggie. Especially if it’s the kind that’ll keep crushing those study calories long after that half hour’s done.

So far, I’m only signed up for the free week. (Yes, they give you a free week.)

But, seeing as I’m suddennly more sedentary and less active, I’ll be coming ’round 9Round a lot more.
