How to lose weight doing… absolutely nothing (Part 1)

We’ve covered a lot of fun “how to lose weight doing XYZ” articles on this site.

From pole dancing to Muay Thai, there’s always a weight loss angle to be found.

But a friend raised a great question the other day:

“How do I lose weight doing… absolutely nothing?”

(It’s like yoga’s “Savasana” – except with a remote…)

And while she was trying to be witty (successfully so; it did make me spit my Starbucks out’ve my nose), the question remained with me. Is it possible? Can you really lose weight by sitting on the sofa and binge-watching John Snow slay dragonwolves (or whatever it is they do in “Game of Thrones” that I can’t remember because I stopped watching one and a half seasons in)? Wouldn’t we all love if laziness could pay off when it came to the scale?

Yes.

And, actually… it can. But, before you jump the gun and perma-plant your sit bones on your sofa, there’s (as always) a catch. Yes, you can burn calories being lazy. But not without puttin’ in some sweaty investment, first. See, if you exercise a couple times a week, this isn’t for you. And if you only ever do LISS (low intensity sustained speed) workouts, this also isn’t for you.

(Protip: BMR isn’t built on selfies. Save those auto-snaps for *after* the hard workout.)

Who it’s for, rather, are the folks willing to put in the effort when they are at the gym. Why? Because the way that the do-nada fat loss happens, is by first raising your BMR (basal metabolic rate). And while the definition of that acronym might be just as confusing as the acronym itself, all it means is how much you’d burn if you just played mattress cadaver all day. It’s how much you’d burn if your only workout was when you ambulated to the can or kitchen – or fidgeted with your phone.

Alright, so that’s a fantastic little nugget of knowledge. But, how can I raise my BMR? What do I actually need to do to ensure my workout’s still footing the caloric body bills on my lazy days? Well, to be fair, one goodly portion of it has to do with none other than genes. Yes, our DNA can either hurt or help us. That said, that’s definitely not an excuse. Because looking good in them jeans doesn’t solely rely on your genes. In fact, you can hack that BMR, blast more calories, and lose weight by simply tweaking just a few things.
