Chrissy Metz’s weight loss transformation

We hear a lot of celebrity weight loss tips.

But, usually it’s about the Alba’s and Biels of the world, isn’t it?

So, when I share that today’s spotlight’s on actress Chrissy Metz, you might be slightly surprised:

But, you totally shouldn’t be.

Why? Because, while the aforementioned Jessica’s have never been obese, Chrissy has indeed. Sure, she’s got a way to go, but she’s already lost a lot of weight. And, that means she knows what it means to work hard in a sustainable enough way to keep losing weight for a long time. (Versus quick fix-starvation-detox diets that don’t last.) In fact, if you’ve ever watched This is Us, you may recognize her as one third of the triplet kiddos starring in it – notorious for her weight issues. (What? Never seen it? Um… please pause reading immediately and go watch the pilot ASAP; I’ll wait…) And, as someone who’s as addicted to this show as Kate is to food, I was delighted to learn that the actress who plays her is on an extreme weight loss path. Why? Well, mostly motivation… on a divine intervention level.

You see, for some of the other actresses, singers, or famous-for-complaining-about-third-world-non-problems-on-a-reality-show stars, it’s about looking good. (Not all of them, but a lot.) It’s about out-hotting the up ‘n coming chicks, nipping at their heels and trying to swipe the limelight. Not for Chrissy. On Chrissy’s 30th birthday, she had that same thing that happened to her on mine: heart palpitations. The difference? Mine had to do with an existential crisis, born from the distinct inability to accept that my 20’s had ceased to be. Mine was a panic attack. Hers, on the contrary, landed her in the hospital – prompting her to reevaluate her lifestyle choices, and immediately initiate a fitness plan.

(Intriguing – since one of the last episodes featured her dude doing exactly that.
Dunno the timeline, but gotta wonder if that was coincidence, prophecy, or IRL inspired art?)

The result? After doing 20 minute walks a day and mindful eating, she went out for another role on American Horror Story… and learned that she wasn’t fat enough for the part. The happy ending? That they still cast her (’cause she’s that good at her craft), but she had to rock a fat suit. And even that, as it turns out, was a beautiful reminder to stay the course. Especially after she (well, her fat suit) got lodged in the trailer entryway, one day. After tugging, squashing, and nearly falling down the steps to the entrance, she had a simultaneous “whoa” moment of Keanu meme proportions. What if she hadn’t started this path? That’s the direction she would’ve headed in – her own overgrown body getting stuck – not a suit.

But the even better happy ending? Well, it extends all the way back from her sobering American Horror experience to the show we all know and love her for. And, I suppose this’s the point where I should say “spoiler alert”. (Even though it should be pretty obvi by now.) ’cause, since she signed a contract to keep on losing weight, that’s exactly what’s gonna happen as TIU continues. Kate loses weight. And, seeing as she already lost 100 lbs, homegirl’s well on her way.

(This is actually 100% fake – it’s that one Mike ‘n Molly lady’s body with Chrissy’s noggin on it.
But it’s still a fun projection for what’s in store for Metz.)

So, what’s the big takeaway here? What’s the tip? Well, while rumors from Hollywood haters are still flying that Chrissy’s being secretive about whether she’ll get a gastric bypass, the de-fattening facts remain: Metz managed to blast that adipose away by inviting mindfulness into her dieting habits, and moving for as little as 20 minutes each day. In fewer than five months, she lost 100 lbs. That’s nothing to scoff at. And, ya know, there’s absolutely nada wrong with keeping your IG feed full’ve thinspo fitness models. (Hey, any way to get us out there moving ’til we’re dirty, while keeping it clean in the kitchen.) But, whatever the motivation, fitness shouldn’t be about calorie penance, so much as a celebration of our bodies and lives. When she legitimately thought she was dying (and thusly resolved to chop off 100 pounds and not stop there), Chrissy Metz wasn’t thinking of looking like Chrissy Tiegen. She just wanted to live. And that’s a beautiful reason to commit to a change. Some of us don’t have that wakeup call. But they say that the intelligent can learn from the mistakes (or successes, for that matter) of others. So, wherever you are on your fitness path (even if it’s at the starting line), let Miss Metz motivate you. Because, while we may not all be able to all relate to an upcoming swimsuit shoot, something like the celebration and protection of life applies to everyone. At any weight. This is a story we can appreciate. This is relatable.

This is… well… this is us.
